Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
