Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
