The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away informed my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
